
Wheelchair Basketball - a brief intro by AnnaJacksonIntroduction:
Wheelchair Basketball is a fast, furious and exciting sport played by both men and women. Wheelchair Basketball is identical to the able-bodied version and is played on the same courts with the same height baskets. Wheelchair Basketball is a growing sport in Great Britain, with over 700 players, forty clubs and approximately 60 teams competing in the Superleague, 1st,2nd, 3rd and 4th divisions.
Who can play the game ?
Wheelchair basketball can be played by people with and without a disability. Each player is given a classification of between 1 and 5 points, in order to play at international level you must have a permanent lower limb disability.
The Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Club
:
The Celtic Warriors were previously known as Chester Wheelchair Jets Basketball club which was formed in April 2002. The 1st team finished fourth 2002/2003, seventh in 2003/2004, sixth in 2004/2005, 3rd in 2005/2006 and were promoted to the 2nd Division at the end of the 2006/2007 season . The Celtic Warriors currently have players with a wide range of age and ability, from 6 and 7 yr olds to 40+ yr olds. The team currently has one Great Britain International Player and two Juniors in the North West Juniors Team.
Players travel from all over the area to play for the Celtic Warriors as it is the only team in the Cheshire/North Wales area. The Club are currently working with the Disability Sport Cymru Development Officers to help develop the sport in
and have recently made a move to train at Darland Sports Centre near Wrexham.
The club itself is run by a small dedicated team of volunteers who make up the club committee, including Chair, Manager, Treasurer, Secretary and player representatives.
