Jets V Bulldogs at home

Jets V Lancashire Bulldogs - Sunday 23 September 2005

Sunday 23rd October saw Chester Wheelchair Jets play their first home game at Northgate arena against Lancashire Bulldogs. A reasonable sized crowd saw the Jets eventually succumb to the Bulldogs’ pressure and lose 29 – 47.

The game saw Chester implementing a new playing system and running some new personnel, and it was an opportunity to see the new kit kindly funded by Chester Lions.

Jets got off to a slow start offensively as they adapted to the new system under real game pace and intensity but the defence stayed strong and the game remained close. As the players became more comfortable within their roles more offensive opportunities were created and the half time score was 18-20 in favour of Lancaster . Peter Grime saw his first court time for Chester and for a player who only joined the club six weeks ago he has a lot of potential and looks a star of the future.

Lancaster made changes at halftime and went to a man on man full court press – whilst the press wasn’t the greatest ever seen Jets struggled to consistently cope as a team. When they did work together the press broke easily – however missed opportunities from breaking the press pushed the momentum more in favour of Bulldogs and increased the pressure for Jets.

Jets rallied in the fourth having become accustomed to the pressure and narrowly won the final period but this was not enough to make up for a poor third quarter.

The new playing system held up well to a good test from a mobile, quick Lancaster team. Missed opportunities and some poor decision making in the third quarter ultimately lead to Chester ’s defeat but the team will have learnt a lot and all seemed in good spirits. On this performance the club looks to be taking strides forwards.

A special presentation was made to Connor Taylor – on of our junior players who is leaving the area. He was presented with a club vest and we all wish him well.
