June 2006:

On Saturday, 17th June 2006 Chris Talbot, Chairman of The Lady Taverners Cheshire and North Wales region, presented four basketball wheelchairs on behalf of The Lord’s Taverners to Stuart McNeill, Peter Grime, Nathaniel Williams and Phillipa Ednay of the Chester Wheelchair Basketball Jets at Darland Sports Centre in Rossett.
The Lord’s Taverners, the famous celebrity sporting charity which raises over £2 million per year to give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance, has two schemes to assist young people.
1) Lords Taverners Standard Sports Wheelchair Scheme - The Lord's Taverners provide standard wheelchairs for club use for a £300 contribution from the club per chair
2) Bespoke Sports Wheelchair Scheme - The Lord's Taverners will provide a grant of up to 50% of the overall cost of a top of the range bespoke sports specific wheelchair.
Through Scheme 1 they have provided Nathanial Williams and Phillipa Ednay with standard basketball wheelchairs and through Scheme 2 they have donated £2600 towards the cost of Stuart and Peter's specialised Bespoke RGK wheelchairs which cost £5,200 in total.
Mark Williams, Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners said that, “Our Sports Wheelchair Sponsorship Scheme was launched in October 2002, and is endorsed by the British Wheelchair Sports Foundation and Tanni Grey-Thompson who is Patron of the scheme. For the past three years the scheme has been helping disabled athletes by making a donation towards the cost of a manual sports wheelchair, enabling more young people to participate in their desired sport. It is a privilege to present this donation to the Wheelchair Jets players and we hope that they continue to succeed in their sport.”
The Lord’s Taverners is a sporting charity, whose objective is to ‘give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance’ by:
- Providing incentives to play cricket in schools and clubs;
- Enabling young people with special needs to participate in sporting activities;
