Jets V Bradford, November 20th 2005

Written by Coach Tim Janvier

Bradford were Chester Wheelchair Jets opponents on Sunday 20th November for a double header at Northgate Arena. The third division league game was followed by a friendly development game to give the less experienced players from both clubs some valuable court time.

3rd Division Match:
Bradford, weakened by the loss of several first team players fielded an under strength side and the difference was clear with Chester running out 68-5 winners on the day. Despite clearly being the stronger team Chester still had to take care of business and after a slow start began to execute their moves more efficiently as the game went on. Chester’s first team were left on for much of the game although ten different players did receive court time. The game gave Chester a great opportunity to continue working on their newly implemented playing system which players are still learning. It is a fairly fluid offence but gives players enough structure to focus on a couple of jobs at a time with out restricting their ability to play basketball. Bradford’s players also learnt and improved a great amount by playing a tougher opposition, coping much better under pressure and creating better shooting opportunities by the end.Special mention must go to some players. Pete Grime made his home debut for the Jets scoring 6 pts, showing real vision with his passes and a rapid improvement since joining the team two months ago. Andy Hickey is settling into the point guard role showing more aggression and speed with each game. Pete Davies and Stu Mcneill showed that their commitment to training is really starting to pay dividends. Caz Ballard was unstoppable offensively and Anna Jackson and Billy Flanagan anchored the team and kept them running as usual. Two weeks training before the next league game and Jets look to be continuing their rise and momentum.

Scorers
Caz Ballard 32, Anna Jackson 19, Andy Hickey 8, Pete Grime 6, Billy Flanagan 2, Stuart Mcneill 1

Development Team Match –
This gave the Jets bench and newer players a run out and chance to try the new playing system.  They all performed really well, despite losing 9-19. Bradford seemed to have benefited from the warm up match against the league team and created some excellent play.  Jets struggled to score, but they created some great opportunities and the players are developing well. Megan Fuller had her first run out in a Jets vest, and all the other Jets had chance to try out the skills they work so hard at in training.

Team for both games – Anna Jackson (captain), Billy Flanagan, Caz Ballard, Andy Hickey, Stuart McNeill, Pete Grime, Phillipa Ednay, Megan Fuller, Ian Downey, Nathaniel Williams, Pete Davies,
