Jets V Bury -away
Chester Jets Bury the Blue Devils Saturday 23rd. Sept 2006 - Match report by Peter Barron
The Jets traveled to Bury to play the Blue Devils who had a very comprehensive win the previous week over the Bradford Bears and so we were expecting a testing first game of the new season.
Chester unveiled their 3 new signings Dave Robertson from Storm and Christine Doyle from the now defunct Dublin Celts in Ireland and also, Rob Allerston from the Vikings in Liverpool but he could not start due to late signing as the Jets were busy in the Transfer Market over the summer.
The team looked organized in their warm up and their shooting on the unforgiving backboards was impressive and also making out the black lines on the court was a little confusing. Then we all sat around waiting for the Referee’s to come for at least half an hour. The Referee’s decided to grace us with their presence and so the game started and the Jets took off like a train and scored 10 points with Christine Doyle opening her account with an excellent shot the team’s first score as well and this was followed by Dave Robertson, Caroline Ballard, Billy Flanagan all scoring before the Bury team could score.
Morris of Bury opened their account with an excellent shot and then Billy and Dave took over the scoring mantle for the team in the 1st. Quarter while Bury replied with 2 more good baskets and this left the score at the first quarter: Bury 6 Jets 16.
The second quarter started off with Jets Captain, Anna Jackson playing a leaders role in scoring the first 2 baskets and Flanagan, Robertson and Ballard all getting on the scoresheet while McCormack, Speight and Afzal all scored for Bury in an entertaining quarter for the players but a dubious one for the referee’s as they seem to call everything that didn’t need to be called and didn’t call the real fouls and so it finished at half time:Bury 12 Jets 36
The Jets started introducing their bench players to the game but still kept up the pressure on Bury and their shooting was well spread around the squad and Doyle Scored 5 points, Robertson 4 points, Jackson 4 points while still keeping experience on the court with our junior players. Afzal was the only scorer for Bury in this quarter and so it finished:Bury 14 Jets 49
This quarter was very good for Bury as they brought up their game and with Chester resting some of the their starting 5 the clawed back 12 points with some excellent shooting from McCormack hitting 6 points, Afzal 2 points and Morris again 4 points and the Jets hitting the odd basket from Ballard and Robertson and so with 16 seconds to go, the Jets coach called a time out and set up a play as the score was 57-26 to the Jets and the jets wanted to hit 60 points in the game.
The move was designed, players did EXACTLY as they were asked with their positioning for the 3 point play and the move worked brilliantly and so as the clock was running down with 2 seconds to go, Robertson put up an excellent 3 pointer, brought the Jets bench to their feet as this was without doubt the best basket the Jets have scored in the 2 seasons I have been watching or involved in the team because everyone worked for the shooter with rebounding positioning, picking, screening and this was I believe a TEAM basket and I was thrilled.
End Score - Bury 26 Jets 60 - This was an interesting game for the junior players in the Chester Jets squad as they see the way their new coach likes to play Basketball with pace, high percentage shooting and work rate in pressing or man to man marking and if they want to achieve more court time, they will have to step up their game and work harder and practice more shooting as only the starting 5 players scored and this is after all a game with 12 players in the squad who should all go onto the court at some stage.
Bury Scorers: McCormack 8, Afzal 8, Morris 6, Speight 4.
Jets Scorers: Robertson 27, Flanagan 12, Jackson 8, Doyle 7, Ballard 6
